Stephanie Meyer releases NEW Twilight novel with Bella and Edward’s genders
Stephanie Meyeer has released a reimagined version of her Twilight novel, reversing the genders of her characters. Mr Marcus Frois, senior sales manager, compares it with the hush-hush hype over the ending of J.K. Rowling’s last Harry Potter book.

Meyer explained how her decision to swap the characters’ genders had been partly encouraged by her readers’ feedback and also her desire to do something “fun” for the 10th anniversary. For instance, E.L. James’ latest instalment in the Fifty Shades series, Grey, is exactly the same plot as the original series but from the perspective of the male rather than female protagonist. Meyer also sought to dispel the perception that Bella was “too consumed with her love interest, as if that’s somehow just a girl thing”.
Most of the characters in Twilight switch genders in Life And Death and are known by slightly different names, apart from Bella’s parents.
Of course there are many ways the Twilight series could have been re-imagined – perhaps with a same-sex love story, or with a heroine that had more agency from the outset? Moreover, it’s also interesting to see an author take that kind of fan feedback and directly incorporate it into a brand new story to be shared and compared with their older work.

Now, ten years on, she’s re-released the original novel, featuring bonus material with a twist: Edward’s the unassuming teenager and Bella’s the broody vampire who just so happens to watch him while he sleeps. According to Meyer, Beau (LOL) is a little OCD and is “totally missing the chip Bella carries around on her shoulder all the time”.
