The track where the crash occurred had been part of a $220 million upgrade of New England Central Railroad tracks. He said that he was relieved that no one died in the accident.

Federal safety rules for tracks that carry passengers require at least two inspections every week.

“This was a freak of nature, ” Governor Peter Shumlin said.

Montpelier Fire Department Lieutenant Dana Huoppi told Fox News the train had five cars, two of which went down an embankment.

One of the injured people was airlifted to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire. The six others went to a local hospital with injuries including neck, back and shoulder pains and lightheadedness. Matthew Lehner, a spokesman for the FRA, said the agency was aware of the accident and investigators were dispatched to the scene.

Once he got off the train, Matthews said he saw a “bedlam of rock” underneath his vehicle and other train cars facing different directions.

“This is not going to be a 24-hour turnaround, this is going to take us a few time”, Shumlin said. As he exited the train and helped other passengers do the same, Brown realized the train had come off the rails. One passenger, Grasso said, jumped into a passenger auto that fell off the tracks to help.

He then heard the train conductor hit the brakes and the train came to a stop, with his auto tipped slightly to the right. Amtrak said it derailed after hitting a rockslide on the tracks.
