In Times Higher Education World University Rankings, released last week, the United States showed “signs of decline”, as did Japan and South Korea.

“The rankings focus specifically on schools’ academic research and reputation overall and not their separate undergraduate or graduate programs, allowing prospective students to accurately compare institutions around the world”, Robert Morse of U.S. News wrote.

The rankings are created to help students, who are increasingly looking outside their own countries for education opportunities, to evaluate their options worldwide as well as by region, country and subject, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Odd, right? The most obvious difference is that while Princeton edges Harvard in the USA, it doesn’t even make the list for the world rankings, which Harvard tops.

The university is rated in the 501-600 band in this year’s rankings, which were announced last Thursday.

While there was little movement in the top 10 between this year and last, one USA school ranked among the top 20 jumped a notable five places.

Boston University was ranked No. 32. In all, the rankings featured 750 institutions, up from 500 a year ago, spread across 57 countries. Beyond that, schools like MIT and Cal Tech, which rank well in the world list, find themselves bested by other schools on the US side.

Ellen Hazelkorn, whose Rankings and the Reshaping of Higher Education was released this year, sees a different message. Subject rankings are based on a separate methodology, which incorporates several factors that measure academic research and reputation in each of these specific fields. Oxford in the U.K.is the top-ranked institution in arts and humanities, and Cambridge sits in the No. 2 spot.
