NEW DELHI: Officially beginning its investigations into the June 4 Manipur attack in which 18 Army men were killed, the National Investigating Agency (NIA) on Tuesday seized some Lethod gun shells and an unexploded Improvised Explosive Device (IED) from the scene of the gruesome killing in the state’s Chandel district.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army has recovered the body of a second insurgent, who got injured in the Manipur ambush and later succumbed to injuries.
Ever since NSCN-K abrogated the truce agreement, it has been trying to make its presence felt. “In spite of NSCN (K) claiming responsibility outright for the Chandel incident, NIA is wasting time implicating the wrong people”, a NSCN (KK) statement said.
“The incident, representing an act of waging war against the Government of India, is alleged to have been executed by armed formations belonging to the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) and its affiliates active in North Eastern Region of India and along the Indo-Myanmar border region…”.
Security sources have admitted that there was an intelligence failure and that a “sense of complacency” could have crept in as no attacks had happened in that area for long.
“We held a meeting with our Myanmar counterparts in April this year and handed over intercepts of phone conversations between two PLA officials and Khaplang, the leader of the insurgent group”. The first truck carrying about 5-6 soldiers also had barrels of fuel which exploded taking out the trucks behind it.
One junior commissioned officer and 19 soldiers were killed on the spot while over a dozen others were later airlifted to a military hospital after a major operation was mounted to sanitize the ambush site and undertake combing missions.
