Father Gianluigi Pasto, 71, the head of the convent, told The Telegraph: “Priests come to us for a period of formation and personal reflection”.

Bonfanti told the newspaper that priests suspected of being gay are often sent to a convent in the northern Italian city of Trento in order to “reflect” on their futures.

The Vatican took action after Krzysztof Charamsa, a mid-level official in its doctrine office, came out in newspaper interviews in Italy and Poland saying he was happy and proud to be a gay priest, and that he was in love with a man whom he identified as his boyfriend. Joined by his partner, Charamsa said that the timing wasn’t “intended to pressurize anyone“, and then we assume he winked and chuckled. Mario Bonfante was forced to leave his parish in Sardinia, even though he had maintained his vow of celibacy.
