2000 form human peace sign to honor John Lennon in NYC
About 2,000 people turned out in New York’s Central Park Tuesday to mark John Lennon’s birthday – and to try to set a world record for the longest human chain in the shape of a peace sign.

On Lennon’s actual birthdate, Ono will be in Reykjavik, Iceland for the annual lighting of the Imagine Peace Tower. The celebration, organized by the non-profit John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, in partnership with the City of New York and the Mayor’s office, was a little early-Lennon would have been 75 this Friday-and breaking the record would require the participation of over 5,80 0 people, the number of people who formed a human peace sign at the Ithaca Festival in 2,008.
A video to the tune of John Lennon’s “Give Peace a Chance” introduces the concept, showing groups of people forming peace signs as a collective unit. The record attempt to honor Ono’s husband, John Lennon, didn’t succeed.
The white stone monument projects a strong light beam into the sky. It is lit each year on that date, and select other dates.
Lennon was born in 1940 in Liverpool and rose to fame as co-founder of the Beatles. This band changed the face of pop and rock music for their generation and generations to come. We assembled ourselves into what we hoped would be the largest-ever human peace sign.
He was assassinated in 1980 at his apartment building on Manhattan’s west side just across from Central Park.
