Son and manager Mark Woodward broke the news to him in August, to which Jones replied: “I don’t give a f**k”. “She’s always had a touch of it. Getting married to her, and having a child, and being in a house in that kind of environment, she didn’t mind it because I don’t think she really enjoyed getting out and about”.

The Welsh singer called his marriage of 58 years “rock solid”, and said “all the rest was fun and games”.

The 75 year-old complained that while he takes pride in his appearance and buys expensive clothes, his wife has stopped making an effort. “She’s the most noteworthy thing in my life”, Sir Tom stated. Despite numerous extra-marital affairs Sir Tom’s wife Linda, has stood by her husband, only once apparently hitting him in response to reading about his infidelity in a newspaper.

“I don’t look like I did either, but I try my best”, he said.

The singer also criticises the corporation in his forthcoming memoir, Top And Back: The Autobiography, which is published this Thursday, writing: “What a cold place the BBC is”.

Danny Cohen, BBC TV chief, described Jones as an “extraordinary figure in music” and said he was “truly sorry” that he had been upset, vowing to put him back on TV “in “something else”.
