CBS is bringing MacGyver back to the small screen, with THR reporting that Furious 7 director, James Wan is on board to head up a rebooted version of the classic TV show. As the Hollywood Reporter notes, Henry Winkler executive produced the original MacGyver, and he is returning to the fold to serve in the same capacity for the new series. There he will use his uncanny knack for creating complex gadgets from bottle tops and cereal packets to avert various disasters from week to week.

The 1980s classic TV series “MacGyver” will come alive as cable network CBS in the midst of putting together a brand new reboot.
James Wan was previously enlisted by New Line to direct its “MacGyver” movie in 2012, which was announced in 2009, with Jason Richman (“Bangkok Dangerous”) writing the script, and Martha and Raffaella De Laurentiis as producers. He was tapped by CBS to direct and executive produce in “MacGyver”. At this time, the MacGyver reboot hasn’t been ordered as a series, though CBS has committed to producing the pilot.
The former Happy Days star was an executive producer on the hit adventure series, which starred Richard Dean Anderson as the titular Angus MacGyver.
The original series ran for seven seasons and 139 episodes, along with two movies. The original MacGyver was an unqualified success during its time on the air, growing to become a cultural institution in the ensuing years. WB wanted to air a Young MacGyver series in the past.

The popular 80s show follows a long list of old show remakes including “Full House”, “The X-Files”, “Heroes”, “Prison Break” and “The Muppets”.
