Brian Blessed delivered a baby then bit through the umbilical cord
The Flash Gordon star was running in Richmond Park when he spotted a woman giving birth on her own, so he kept her company and helped ease the baby out, and then dealt with the umbilical cord and cleaned up the newborn.

He told listeners: “I was in Richmond Park and a woman was having a baby under a tree and there was nobody around”.
The 78 year old actor relayed graphic details about the birth and explained how he bit the umbilical cord to cut it, and then licked the baby’s face before calling an ambulance.
“Because I’d been brought up around babies, in a kind of working-class background, I rushed across to her a got her legs open”. “I was covered in blood, my shirt was covered in blood, I was wrapping her, wiping her ‘It’s alright darling!’ and I was licking the baby’s face”. “She knew me from ‘Z Cars.’ ‘Please, I’m having a baby”…
She knew me in Z-Cars.
The larger-than-life actor, who is originally from Mexborough – made the startling revelation on the Midweek show hosted by Libby Purves.
If you saw Brian Blessed trending today on Twitter and had a momentary panic that he’d died, you wouldn’t be the only one – but fear not; he was actually appearing there for a far different reason.
But Blessed insisted his account was “absolutely true” and said his hands-on approach was a product of growing up in a mining village in South Yorkshire. I’ve just never talked about it.
Purves said: “If it’s true I can think of few less restful things than having Brian Blessed attend my birth in a park, but there you go”.
An unconvinced Purves voiced what a woman might feel after unexpectedly going into labour and seeing Blessed, known for his booming voice, running to their rescue.

Blessed retorted: “You can’t get your head round that, can you?”
