No Big 3 or Diaw for Spurs’ preseason opener

Sacramento is coming off a 109-105 overtime victory over the Portland Trail Blazers to open the preseason.

Duncan’s first attempt at kicking a footy through an open doorway in the Spurs gym is awful but luckily his second attempt, with a few guidance from Aussie teammate Patty Mills, is much better.

Franchise star DeMarcus Cousins, who was heavily involved in trade rumors in the offseason, followed with 22 points also having seven rebounds.

Player care and maintenance are hallmarks of the way the San Antonio Spurs do things, as newcomer LaMarcus Aldridge is quickly discovering.

Despite coach Gregg Popovich’s promises to play his veteran players more this preseason, the team’s four senior-most holdovers won’t be making the trip to the preseason opener, held out for “rest and rehabilitation”, per a team release.

Popovich is, of course, the Jedi master of managing player minutes and workloads, so Aldridge must have known to expect a surprise absence or three every now and then when he signed on with the Spurs.
