Janet Jackson, The Smiths, and The Cars are among the acts nominated for induction into the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The nominees represent “the splintering of genres that increasingly began to characterize popular music since the “90s – and the variety of nominees that I think we’ll see from now into the future”, says Rolling Stone contributing editor Anthony DeCurtis”.
As it has done the past few years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is offering fans the chance to vote for their favorite nominees. Cleveland is the home of rock “n” roll. The top five vote-getters in those polls will comprise a single ballot to be tallied alongside those of the 800 or so “real” voters, who are current Hall of Famers, industry professionals and certain members of the media (not me, just FYI). The inductees will be named in December, with a ceremony scheduled for next April in New York. The Cars’ brittle New Wave pop of “My Best Friend’s Girl” helped define the turn into the 1980s.
The appearance of the J.B.’s among the contenders, a band that included Brown’s celebrated saxophonist Maceo Parker and trombonist-arranger Fred Welsey, fills the early-R&B slot that typifies the hall’s nominations.
But it’s the first time for Janet Jackson, who recently released her first album in seven years and launched a tour. This is the fourth attempt for N.W.A. to make the final cut, as well as the third time for Deep Purple and The Spinners. Acts nominated in their first year of eligibility, like Green Day last year, usually are slam dunks for inclusion but no one fits that bill this year.
Miller also holds the distinction of the longest gap between the year he became eligible (1993) and his first nomination.
