The Delhi Assembly had referred the case of alleged harassment of Mr. Singh by the Delhi Police to the Privileges Committee of the House. The legislators’ salary was last increased, by 100 per cent, in September 2011 by the then Sheila Dikshit government, citing inflation and rise in the cost of living. The conveyance allowance will be raised from Rs 6,000 to Rs 30,000.

An independent panel has recommended a hike in the salary of the MLAs of Delhi.

“With its unlimited generosity in the matter of pay and allowances for Delhi MLAs, the Aam Aadmi Party Government has become “Khas” Aadmi Party (KAP)”, he said while hitting at the Delhi Government. A reimbursable sum of Rs 70,000 per month has also been recommended as allowance under the head “Secretarial, Research and Office Assistance”, which is Rs 30,000 at present. The communication allowance will be increased from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000.

The one-time allowances of MLAs have also been recommended to be increased significantly with one time “office furnishing” allowance of Rs 1 lakh, Rs 60,000 for purchasing office equipment and a vehicle loan of Rs 12 lakh, which is Rs 4 lakh at present.

The revision of the legislators’ pay has been finalised by a group of experts of the panel.

“We have gone into various aspects relating to the expenses and there are so many other considerations, on the basis of which we have decided that they should get this salary on these levels of allowances”, Expert Committee member Balraj Malik told the media here. The committee also proposed that MLAs should not be given free accommodation, and power and water reimbursements.
