The day is set aside to encourage everyone to celebrate the simple joys of walking every day, and to promote the health benefits of walking and bicycling to school and work whenever possible.

“International Walk to School Day is a big day at FedEx”, said Tabatha Stephens, manager of FedEx Global Charitable Giving. This year the event is Wednesday. Students at Dennis Lab School will be carrying banners and form a “walking school bus” leading to school at 8:00 am on October 7.
Safe Kids coalitions across the country are holding events with more than 600 elementary schools for worldwide Walk to School Day. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October. Teachers are also encouraged to incorporate health and safety lessons into their curriculum.
Volunteers from the city of Bartlesville, state lawmakers and others will greet students as they arrive at participating schools. The goal of this partnership is to increase student health, as well as pedestrian and biker safety to and from school. NASCAR Xfinity Series Driver Scott Lagassee Jr. will be joining the students for their walk to school.

Called “International Walk and Roll to School Day”, the Safe Routes to Schools program, now in its 10th year, is aimed at persuading more children and families to safely use green modes of transportation, using public transit and carpooling as well as bicycles.
