United States airman who helped thwart French train attack is stabbed

Stone, 23, was stabbed repeatedly in the upper body outside a nightclub in a hip neighborhood in his hometown of Sacramento in what police described as an alcohol-related fight that had nothing to do with terrorism. He underwent surgery at the medical center which has a Level 1 trauma unit and is now in the intensive care unit. An Air Force spokesman said on Thursday, October 8, 2015, that Stone, who helped subdue an attacker on a Paris-bound train in August, is in stable condition after being stabbed in California.

Spencer Stone, one of the heroes from the failed terrorist attack on a French train in August, has yet again put his life in danger to saving someone else.

“His injuries were significant”, said Dr. Douglas Kirk, the hospital’s chief medical officer.

Bernard said he did not know whether Stone was drinking, but others in his group were.

Bernard declined to discuss what events led to the altercation, saying the case is being actively investigated.

“At this point we have no reason to believe Mr. Stone is in any kind of (legal) trouble”, Bernard said.

The fight continues in the middle of the street just before 1 a.m. on Thursday.

The other group consisted of two or three people who fled the scene in a gray or black Toyota Camry and had not been apprehended, Bernard said.

Stone is not expected to face criminal charges stemming from the fight.

President Barack Obama met with the three Americans last month, praising them for their quick thinking and courage and calling them “the very best of America”. He also received the Airman’s Medal.

The dispute in fact was not relevant to Stone’s responsibility in crossing the gunman linked to train going to Paris and with no relation to really terror, Sacramento Deputy Police Chief Ken Bernard instructed a information webinar.

Stone is the second of the three Americans to be shaken by violence at home since their return.

Skarlatos tweeted Thursday: “Everybody send prayers out to the Stone family today”.

Skarlatos, whose heroics led to an invitation from ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars”, was rehearsing in Los Angeles instead of attending Umpqua Community College when a gunman killed nine people there October. 1.
