15 quarantined over Ebola scare at UCTH according to local media

Following a suspected Ebola case in Calabar, Cross River state, the Federal Government has dispatched a team of medical personnel to the state to verify the incident.

The statement read in part: “On Wednesday, of October 7, 2015, we managed a patient who presented symptoms mimicking viral hemorrhagic fever”.

He was reported to have died at about 2pm, after symptoms related to the deadly Ebola virus manifested before he finally passed away.

More than 11,000 people died in the West African Ebola outbreak, the worst known occurrence of the disease in history.

A statement by Dr Queenet Kalu, Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAG), on behalf of the Medical Director of the hospital, said the public would be informed as soon as results of the blood samples are released, adding that the hospital management had quarantined those identified to have had contacts with the patient.

The deceased whose identity could not be ascertained, was said to have been taken to the UCTH from Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday with very high body temperature.

However, the Federal Ministry of Health has ruled out the case of Ebola, saying that it suspected that the patient could have died of Haemorrhagic fever.

“The Federal Ministry of Health is sending additional support tomorrow (Friday)”.

Meanwhile, Cross River Government has said it was awaiting results of blood samples of the patient.

The scare had begun when a few workers in the hospital who sought anonymity confided to The Guardian that a few patients brought into the Emergency Department of the hospital yesterday had shown EVD symptoms.

Dr. Kalu stated that those quarantined are principally nurses who attended to the patient and those who came in contact with him before his death.
