Mountaineers safety Karl Joseph out for season with knee injury

Karl Joseph, an All-American safety for the West Virginia Mountaineers, is out for the season after a knee injury suffered while participating in a non-contact drill during practice. His five interceptions leads the NCAA, and he’s also recorded a sack, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery in only four games.

“He exemplifies what it means to be a Mountaineer”.

Joseph has been West Virginia’s best defensive player through the first four games of the season, hauling in five interceptions, which is tied for most in the country.

“I am devastated and heartbroken for Karl, ” Holgorsen said in a statement. Three of those came in West Virginia’s season opener against Georgia Southern. Gutting as it is to see any All-American-caliber player cut down by injury, it’s particularly disappointing when that player is performing at the highest level of his career.

Joseph was known for his punishing hits and was second on the team with 20 tackles this season.

“I want to thank my teammates and my coaches for their outpouring of support”, Joseph said in a school release.

West Virginia University hosts Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State next Saturday in an important matchup for both teams.

The other name added to the safety section of the depth chart, Jeremy Tyler, has already made an impact on the football field this season.

Joseph sports a compact frame and shows little regard for his own welfare, exploding into ball-carriers.

He developed a reputation for being one of the hardest hitters in all of college football as the enforcer of the Mountaineers’ secondary. Dana Holgorsen said as a response to Joseph’s end as a Mountaineer.
