ROTHERHAM United have reportedly been told they won’t be allowed to speak to highly-rated Walsall manager Dean Smith regarding the vacant manager’s job at the New York Stadium.
Though the club is not named, it is understood to be the Millers.
Redfearn, who is out of work after leaving his role at Leeds academy director in July, will hold talks with Millers chiefs this week.
Speaking to Walsall Advertiser, Smith said ‘It’s been rejected and for me that makes it a little bit easier because I don’t have to think about things’.
Walsall have confirmed that the approach was “categorically rejected”.
“As one of the longest serving managers in the country, Dean has been instrumental in the club’s progress since his appointment and is fundamental to our future plans”.
The Saddlers, second in League One, now stand just five places below Rotherham in the league pyramid.
Rotherham, who appointed Eric Black as caretaker boss following the surprise departure of Evans on September 28, have been linked with several candidates for the permanent job, including Walsall boss Smith.

But skipper Lee Frecklington is still affected by a calf injury which could see him miss out when the Millers return from the global break a week on Saturday at Brentford.
