Facebook launches test of ‘Reactions,’ its version of the ‘dislike’ button

Facebook director of product for News Feed Adam Mosseri told Ingrid Lunden of TechCrunch the social network chose Ireland and Spain because the two countries’ user bases are mostly national, without extensive worldwide friend networks, making them ideal test beds.

For those excited after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced they were working on a “nuanced dislike button”, get ready to be disappointed.

But Chris Cox, Facebook’s chief product officer, says in a post that the company plans to use the feedback from the test run to make improvements, with the hope of launching the buttons globally “soon”.

He also said that the popular call for a “dislike” button originates from a need to express empathy as opposed to criticizing a Facebook status.

The new “Reactions” will be added to the like button and you can access the reactions by pressing the like button.

In the ongoing tests, clicking the thumbs-up icon opens seven icons: Like, Love, Haha, Yay, Wow, Sad and Angry. The status update will display segments for each reaction that can be tapped and used.

Facebook’s “Like” button is now facing competition.

In the announcement of the new Facebook Reactions, we see the new feature which will appear with a long press on the like button as a pop up of 7 different Facebook emoji.

“Not every moment is a good moment, and sometimes you just want a way to express empathy”, he wrote. “I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years”.

The easiest way to understand Reactions is to think of them as an extension of the current Like button. “We hope you like this – or can better express how you’re feeling!”

There’ll be little trackers underneath the post that will rack up how many of each reaction its received, in a similar way to how “Likes” are counted now.
