Her friend then posted the before and after pics to her Instagram account.
The seemingly good-natured tweet was favorited and retweeted hundreds of times.
The photo went viral and inspired copycats, BuzzFeed reports. “Ashley is a strong girl, but even she was hurt by this”. “After this picture was posted and I read all the comments, I lost all my confidence”.
“My advice for people who may have to deal with this in the future is it doesn’t matter what people say about you or what they think about you”, she said.
“I used to be entertained by many memes”, Ashley says on YouTube.
“Some days I will read through the comments and just see how cruel people can be”, VanPevenage said in the video.
‘I have never been one to be uncomfortable going out in public in my natural skin, my natural hair, until this picture was posted, ‘ she went on.
The 20-year-old student was shocked to see there were thousands of “disturbing and nasty” comments about how different she looked in the two photos, and about her acne.
She picked out a few choice zingers to illustrate her point, recalling how hurt she was to read each of them.
But after dealing with it for months, VanPevenage said she realized other people’s opinions don’t matter and shouldn’t stop her from living her life. “Everyone should feel handsome in their natural skin and it doesn’t matter what’s on the outside”.
