Memphis rapper Robert ‘Koopsta Knicca’ Phillips was a Three 6 Mafia alumnus

“My group member and brother for over 20 years, Robert “Koopsta Knicca” Phillips passed away today at 12:55 am CST from a major stroke he had sunday after showering”. Unfortunately, Phillips ended up passing away early Friday morning (Oct. 9th).

In a statement to Commercial Appeal, DJ Paul says, “Everyone who knew Koop knew he was very amusing and the coolest guy ever”.

He had recently started working on a solo record, according to DJ Paul. We made classics together that’ll live on!!! We had concerts coming up starting next month too.

Memphis rap staples Three 6 Mafia have lost one of their long-time members, as Koopsta Knicca has died.

A GoFundMe crowd-funding effort has been established to help the rapper with his medical bills.

The group rebranded itself as Da Mafia 6ix on its 2015 album, Watch What U Wish.

Sadly, Phillips passed late last night, and Paul confirmed the news with a heartfelt message to fans this morning. In more recent years, he’d continued to release a series of albums and mixtape projects, before reuniting with other ex-Three 6 members to form Da Mafia 6ix. “He had an Aneurysm yesterday in its blood on his brain”, Paul shared, updating fans earlier this week. Three 6’s Juicy J paid his respects on social media as well. The group’s dark sound and macabre lyricism left an imprint on ensuing generations of rappers, and Koopsta Knicca’s own rich, grim rhymes and musical flow were a large part of the appeal.
