NYPD launches new community policing plans
New York’s police force is poised to increase with 1,300 additional officers in a position shift of New York Mayor, Bill de Blasio. Mr. Bratton stressed that all officers would receive new training and technology, the full neighborhood policing program would only go into effect in unspecified high-crime precincts-which he refused to list.

Additionally, the budget authorizes the hiring of 400 administrative aides to take over desk jobs now filled by police officers. The costs will be offset by $70 million in savings, largely by creating a cap on department overtime.
The NYPD will stop administering its entrance exam for the next three months so it can work through a backlog of 50,000 applicants and, going forward, will graduate smaller classes of recruits in order to focus more on their training, police Commissioner Bill Bratton said Thursday. Murders have risen from 138 to 154, an 11 percent jump, through June 21, while shootings have gone up from 488 to 515.
The plan includes dividing police precincts into sectors that align with neighborhood boundaries, training officers to identify and manage community concerns and dedicating time for them every day to be out in the community to build relationships, officials said. The official was not authorized to speak publicly until the deal is officially announced and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. New York will get almost 1,300 extra police officers to strengthen counter-terrorism efforts, and improve neighborhood policing and relations with local communities, the mayor has said. Capital New York reports that Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) is publicly criticizing de Blasio over what he sees as a failure to reform the Police Department adequately.
The approach sharply differs with the stop, question and frisk police tactic that, for years, had been employed by officers, disproportionately affecting black and Hispanic men.
Simmons went on to rant he and many other progressive groups worked hard to get de Blasio elected and to date he has done very tiny to earn that support.
Finding good news in all this was considerably tougher for Mayor Bill de Blasio.
