Chelsea sign Amelia on a free transfer

Chelsea, meanwhile, announced on Thursday that former Italy and AC Milan goalkeeper Marco Amelia had joined them on a free transfer.

Despite joining Perugia last season, Amelia has not played since 2014, when he was with AC Milan.

Amelia will wear the number 32 shirt and will be available for selection against Aston Villa next weekend, but he’s nearly certainly going to have to make-do with a place on the bench with Begovic continuing in goal.

Amelia’s arrival means that Mourinho will have the luxury of an experienced pair of hands around the first-team squad as he attempts to turn the west London club’s poor start to the season around following the conclusion of the worldwide break.

The Blues are short of cover between the sticks after Thibaut Courtois was ruled out until December due to a knee injury.

Courtois is continuing his recovery in the hydrotherapy pool at the Cobham training facility.

Another goalkeeping name that is associated with Chelsea is the young Jamal Blackman who has seemingly now been further down in the pecking order. The experience of Marco Amelia will provide a stable backup to the Bosnian shot-stopper but game time for his backup may be hard to come by.
