While folks continued to doubt if this genuinely had nothing to do with the diesel scandal that broke out last month, Volkswagen today provided more details about the voluntary safety measure.

The company said that the quality assurance department of the company has examined that the hand-brake mechanism in the cars may not function effectively as expected under certain conditions.

As per reports, recently the local unit a spokesman told Reuters that the German carmaker Volkswagen AG’s India unit is all set to investigate the Polo hatchback cars it trades over the technical issues.

The company pointed out that the customers owning the identified vehicles will be actively contacted by its dealers to come for an inspection and preventive fix. Post the repairs, VW will resume the deliveries of the affected Polo hatchbacks.

The company said, it will commence with the inspection and repairs of the faulty handbrake with immediate effect. “The activity at the workshop will require approximately one hour and will be carried out at no cost to the customer”, said the company.

“We request not to physically deliver any Polo vehicle (all variants) with immediate effect till further notice from Volkswagen, ” it said in a letter sent to about 120 dealers on Wednesday. This concerns a limited number of cars out of a specific production period.

VW India after sending an advisory to dealers later clarified that it had nothing to do with the EA 189 diesel engine, which has been embroiled in the recent controversy in the U.S. surrounding a software which was capable of cheating emission tests. Matthias Mueller, the newly appointed CEO, has pledged to start a global recall of affected vehicles in January, a process that is expected to be completed by 2016-end.
