NDP Releases Election Platform

He has suggested that the shameful inaction of the Conservative government on Syrian refugees is the result of so-called “security concerns” – the implication being that refugees fleeing danger only wish to come to Canada in order to destroy it from within.

After a decade in office, Harper is facing off against two rivals, Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, who are hoping to tap into a desire for change among voters. He also demanded that Harper apologize. “We will lower taxes for Canadians with incomes between $44,700 and $89,401 per year from 22 percent to 20.5 percent”.

“(Harper) had already done that before he appeared before us to emote, talking about his own family after seeing the body of that little child on that beach in Turkey.

Logically, the birthplace of an individual should have nothing to do with someone’s identity, their qualification to hold political office or their suitability to become a citizen of another country.

While slumping fortunes in Quebec have been the NDP’s biggest problem, it has not been helped by a surprisingly good campaign by Trudeau and by a well-defined but nearly grossly cynical campaign by Stephen Harper and the Conservatives.

Later Thursday, Harper defended the PMO’s audit of the Syrian refugee applications. Known as the Protection of Canada’s Vital Cyber Systems Act, the government would spend $36.4 million over five years that would go towards cyber security tools, security information and expertise.

But the Conservative leader said he’s not the central issue in this campaign.

The Tories last month committed to accepting 10,000 refugees within one year by simplifying and speeding up the application process, while stressing the key to ending the crisis was to defeat the Islamic State group.

Harper continues to push the message that the choice for voters a week from Monday is between Conservative prudence and “reckless” Liberal spending with “immediate tax hikes” and deficits.

A few 2,500 refugees have arrived in Canada since the government began opening spaces for Syrians in 2013.

Another election? I have to pretend to care about politics again?

As a serious contender for the White House, her stance casts much doubt on the future of a deal that still faces months of intense debate in the USA before it can be ratified.

“Trust me, apart from the kids, your energy just feeds him when he’s out on the road so long”, said Sophie Gregoire, encouraging thousands of cheering partisans as she introduced Trudeau in Brampton, Ontario, last weekend. On the TPP, Mulcair criticized Harper’s negotiating in the final days.

In the interview, Harper was reminded that prime ministers such as Brian Mulroney and Jean Chrétien retired by the 10-year mark and that one who chose to run beyond that benchmark, Pierre Trudeau, was defeated in a 1979 election.

“I try, always, to have respect for adversaries, ” said Mulcair, who will release the NDP’s full platform Friday in Montreal. “There is still a great deal of voter uncertainty”.

Harper rejected accusations his stance on niqabs and on stripping citizenship of dual nationals convicted of terrorism is motivated by a political strategy to stoke fear and anger.

Despite losing ground in the national polls, the NDP say they are still in it to win it.

That means working with Mr. Trudeau, whose party is now topping the polls and who said in April he would be more open to forming a coalition with New Democrats if Mr. Mulcair was not running the party.

As Tommy Douglas said, “Cheer up, it’s not too late to make a better world” and country.
