Records fall as high heat envelopes Southern California

A National Weather Service heat advisory for the valleys is scheduled to take effect at 10 a.m. Friday as offshore flow and building high pressure drive temperatures to 10 to 20 degrees higher than average.
“By Wednesday or Thursday we’ll have another round of rain”, said meteorologist Rich Thompson.
High temperatures are expected to reach unsafe levels, from 98-102 degrees in places like Escondido and El Cajon. “We may see a few showers, maybe even a few thunderstorms, but it’s far enough out that we’re unsure of rainfall amounts”.
Along the coast, meanwhile, “a moderately long-period swell will bring risky rip currents and increased wave activity at area beaches this weekend”, an NWS statement said.
Elsewhere in the county, warmer and mostly sunny conditions are in Friday’s forecast along with high temperatures of 85 to 95 degrees in the mountains and around 99 in the deserts.
