Children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people who compromised immune systems are most vulnerable.
The listeria came from chicken that was cooked and diced, showing just how resilient the bacteria can be.
Though Whole Foods has not yet obtained any results of pathologies or illness, it said Wednesday that this cheese invoked “has the posssibility to become plagued by Listeria monocytogenes”. Whole Foods says all sell by dates are affected.
The Papillon cheese is packaged in a plastic wrap and can be identified by its label beginning with PLU 029536.
Whole Foods locations will post signs on store shelves to notify shoppers about the recall; affected customers can receive a full refund with a receipt. FDA has given a number which any person can contact if they have any questions.
Other foods, such as vegetables, can also carry listeria, usually after contracting it from contaminated soil. The incubation period can lie anywhere between two and sixty days, says Marler, a food safety lawyer.
Listeria can cause people to get so sick they have to be hospitalized, according to the FDA. This infection is an important public health problem in US. Healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
