Nine construction workers were injured, three critically, after an on-ramp bridge that is being constructed along the 91 Freeway in Corona partially collapsed late Friday, officials said.
During a bridge-lowing operation, workers were placing a new bridge deck into position when the temporary support beams near East Grand Boulevard collapsed, injuring the workers. The agency reportedly says in a news release that those beams hit workers and caused injuries.
The injured workes were transported to a hospital.
An investigation into the incident was being handle by the California Occupation Safety and Health Administration.
The construction project began in 2014 as an initiative to widen the 91 Freeway with one regular lane and two toll lanes in each direction, KABC reported.
