“While in the process of making the arrest, the suspect shot at the officers with a crossbow, striking a Montcalm County deputy”, according to a state police statement. A Montcalm County Deputy was shot by the crossbow and taken by helicopter to Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus where he remains in stable condition.

Kevin Sweeney of the Lakeview post said a trooper returned fire on the suspect, who was also not named, at least once after the deputy was hit with the arrow.

The dead man has not been identified by police, but neighbors said his name was Travis Quay.

The police were serving the suspect with an arrest warrant for felonious assault, WOOD reported.

That trooper has been placed on administrative leave while law enforcement officials conduct an investigation into the incident.
