Jeff Burris gets a promotion on Dolphins’ defensive staff

The Dolphins have fired defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle, a league source confirmed.

Coyle’s firing comes days after the team fired head coach Joe Philbin. Through four weeks, the Dolphins have posted a few of the worst defensive numbers in the game.

“I’d love to say that, ‘Hey, we’re going to have this thing done immediately.’ That’s just not reality…I’ve got to make sure I’m making the best decision I can for the Miami Dolphins”.

Anarumo is in his fourth season with the Dolphins. Prior to his time with the Dolphins, Coyle made stops at the college ranks in Cincinnati, Arkansas, Holy Cross and Syracuse among others. Anarumo has been on the team’s coaching staff since February 2012 when he was hired by Joe Philbin to be the Dolphins’ defensive backs coach.

Interim coach Dan Campbell said Wednesday he hadn’t yet decided on whether he would keep Coyle in his current position.

Because of that startling lack of production, Coyle was let go on Thursday with defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo being promoted to defensive coordinator for the remainder of the season. He will be tasked with improving a defense that ranks 30th in total defense and last in rushing defense.

Assistant coach Blue Adams will continue to work with the safeties.
