“To the dismay of our friends in the Pentagon and Langley, our strike yesterday with precision-guided weapons at ISIS infrastructure in Syria hit its targets”, the statement read.

Russia’s defence ministry declined to comment and the US State Department said it could not confirm the reports.

The Russian defence ministry denied that any of the missiles had fallen short of their targets.

The jihadists launched a surprise attack on non-Isil rebel positions north of Aleppo on Thursday night, seizing at least three villages and a former army base that rebels had captured from troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad two years ago.

Seeking to underline the dangers, United States officials said four Russian cruise missiles fired from a warship in the Caspian Sea had crashed in Iran, which drew a swift denial from Russia.

“All our cruise missiles hit their target”, said ministry spokesman General Igor Konashenkov. This means the probably path for missiles fired into Syria would be through both Iran and Iraq.

However, the Observatory said there had been no significant advances by government forces backed by allied militia in areas where ground offensives were launched this week.

The Republican chair of the Senate homeland security committee suggested last week that personnel on the ground could set up safe zones for Syrians displaced by the country’s ongoing civil war.

Gen. Qassem Suleimani, head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, also went to Moscow in August with the message that Russian airstrikes against the Islamic State group in Syria were imperative, two senior officials told AP.

Carter emphasized that the USA would not work with Russian Federation militarily in Syria but also that they needed to come to a few sort of agreement to avoid accidents between their forces over Syria. One official said there may be casualties, but another official said this is not yet known.

Carter has made it clear that the U.S.-led coalition will not agree to cooperate with Russian Federation in the fight against the Islamic State and no collaboration is possible as long as Moscow continues to strike other targets.

He said that that Putin’s move in Syria will not present a challenge to USA leadership in the Middle East and that the Russian president is making a mistake.

But Washington has accused Russian Federation of targeting groups other than IS or Al-Nusra in more than 90 per cent of its raids.
