Darren Fletcher devastated after ‘low blow’ ends Scotland hopes

Scotland knew all about the danger posed by Lewandowski, Europe’s in-form striker with 12 goals in his previous four matches, but they were helpless to stop him opening the scoring with just over two minutes played. Both teams played to a very high level, but we know that any result is possible. I do hope I’m wrong.

“They are the priority at the moment, those guys in there”. I’ll leave that to other people.

Much of the pre-match build-up focussed on Poland’s claims that they had been roughly treated by Scotland in the first qualifying match between the two sides in Warsaw.

“From where we’ve been, it’s a huge improvement to where we were”.

But the gaffer was so disappointed like the rest of us, even more so.

“We’ll be confident of causing Poland problems, too, as we’ve Shane Long, Daryl Murphy, Jonny Walters and Robbie Keane – plenty of players to cause them problems”. The nation saw a group of lads give as much as they can give. It would a fine achievement for a side that missed out on the 2014 World Cup, and they have since regrouped to look like a real force on the European stage.

“I think there’s been a little bit of bad luck”.

When asked about the Irish win over Germany, Nawalka said: “I only found out a few minutes before the end and the players had no idea. I just thought it was exciting, that’s for sure”.

“After working hard for a year, and then something like that happens in the last seconds of a game”. Everything we’ve had had to be really earned.

SCOTLAND probably have to beat Poland if they are to have any chance of making it to France.

“You have to hold hands up and say well done to Ireland”. No doubt about it. Ireland have taken four points off Germany – and we lost in Georgia.

But Strachan said: “It’s not about points or money”.

Wales have scored only nine goals, so when Bale does something good, it tends to counts. Strachan’s future will be debated in the days leading up to the final fixture against Gibraltar on Sunday. That will be a hard one to take.

“He has prepared us all week and done everything right until a goal comes in injury time”.

The stunned Scotland fans eventually found their voice and urged their team on as they pushed for an opening but couldn’t find a way past a Polish defensive unit that had conceded just seven goals in qualifying.

And in reference to the block tackle from Gordon Greer that went unpenalised a year ago, Lewandowski added further: “I hope the situation on Thursday is not the same as in Warsaw because after that foul by Greer I couldn’t run”. We’ll go back and everyone needs to calm down after the game and we’ll speak about it before Gibraltar.
