Meanwhile, South Indian actor and actresses including Dhanush and Kushboo Sundar shared their condolences on Twitter.
Fondly called Aachi, Manorama has acted in more than 1,200 films and 1,000 plays.
Manorama has been active until recent years and she has acted with nearly all heroes of this generation like Ajith, Vijay, Suriya, Vikram.
Even while acting in plays in Pallathur, she got a chance to act in a film with late S.S. Rajendran and Devika made in Pudukottai. Born Gopishantha to Kasi Kilakudaiyar and Ramamirtham at Mannargudi in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, she started her acting career on stage at age 12. She was 78 and is survived by her son and singer-actor Boopathy.
Coming from a very strong theater background, the gifted performer could reprise any type of a role with utmost ease and perfection.
As a stage artiste, she chose to change her name to Manorama.
The death of Manorama is certainly the end of an era as she is one of the most talented and highly respected artists to have ever emerged in Tamil cinema and she is probably the first among a few of the women artists who registered a strong and lasting imprint as a comedy artist. She had also appeared in plays with another chief minister of Tamil Nadu, M. Karunanidhi.
She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2002 and also won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for “Pudhiya Pathai” in 1989.

Film historian Vamanan in his book Thirai Isai Alaigal has said it was Mukta Srinivasan who gave her an opportunity to render the song in Madras Tamil in the film Bommalattam. Her performance in the 1968 Tamil movie “Thillana Mohanambal” was widely appreciated.
