Germany’s Jan Frodeno wins Ironman World Championship
The last non-Brit and non-Aussie to win the women’s crown was Switzerland’s Natascha Badmann. Britain’s Rachel Joyce has on two occasions medalled on Hawaii’s Big Island and is likely to repeat that success, and hopefully add a Kona crown to her second and third finishes of 2013 and 2014.

Suffice it to say there are a number of women who can finish in the top five here tomorrow. “I had an experience where, I don’t really know what happened, but basically I went insane and tried to jump out of a window onto a freeway”.
“I had no power and I was going backwards, basically”, Carfrae said.
Last year’s top American finisher, Ben Hoffman, who was the runner-up in 2014, struggled to make it through to the end because of apparent stomach issues, per the Ironman Triathlon.
He aged up this year and had visions of making a podium appearance as the young guy in the 55 to 59-year-old age group. She worked hard to overturn nearly a fifteen minute deficit to pass a tiring Ryf, which highlights her running capabilities and also the determination synonymous with endurance racing. Countries including Portugal, Singapore, Norway, Estonia and Brazil experienced the largest percent growth in athlete representation since 2014.
It was unusually hot, even by Hawaiian Ironman standards, and two-time Olympian Brad Kahlefeldt suffered in his debut at the race. Maybe I’m greedy. I qualified in 9hr15min25sec at the New Zealand champs in Taupo in March finishing 18th overall. Frodeno was third out of the water and first off the bike and shared the podium with countyman Andreas Raelert (8:17:43), who finished second despite a fall on the bike course.
A total of 2,367 athletes entered the race.
This will be the largest athlete field ever at the Ironman World Championship.
“Racing is an opportunity for me to figure out how tough I am”.
“I honestly think it’s more rewarding than if it was for myself”. Within a matter of seconds, a light breeze on the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway can shift and create unwieldy headwinds and unsafe crosswinds that have been known to knock athletes off of their bikes.
He said he’s spent more time on the bike this year.
But when defending champion Mirinda Carfrae of Australia learned she was more than 14 minutes off the leader, Swiss superstar Daniela Ryf, at the 2014 Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, she didn’t back down.
In the men’s race there are four professional British athletes, including Tim Don, who is one of the most highly fancied “rookies” on the start line.
“I feel a really powerful sense of mission and goal with all of [the] running I do”, Astin tells SI.com. “Someone there actually had to ask if I was in the race”, Haller said.
Caroline Steffen and Jodie Swallow are the two stellar athletes who can keep Ryf on her toes. They each won the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in August and will be looking for the rare world championship double.

This will be the third time Dowell has competed in the Ironman World Championship, having previously impressed in 2011 and 2012. It features both the pro races and inspiring age-grouper stories and has won several Emmy awards. Prior to that, the original record had stood for 14 years.
