UCF still winless, loses at home to UConn 40-13

Connecticut offensive lineman Richard Levy (71) signals a touchdown as quarterback Bryant Shirreffs dives in the pile on a quarterback sneak for a score against Central Florida during the first half of an NCAA college football game, Saturday, October 10, 2015, in Orlando, Fla.

UConn’s offense compiled 426 total yards and UCF’s staggered in at 315 after a 65-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown in its final possession. UCF wanted no part of the rivalry, saying its official rivalry is with nearby South Florida. Bob Diaco has his first road win, and the Huskies have three wins on the season, but one was against Villanova and the other two have come against a few of the worst teams in FBS.

Diaco said the trophy is “something to energize the players and staffs on both sides, hopefully energize the fan bases on both sides so that we can have a great energetic game that is classy and high character, that’s clean and with fairness”.

Justin Holman, who was released by doctors last week after breaking a finger on his throwing hand against Stanford, was picked off three times and had numerous passes dropped, while the UCF running game managed just 60 yards.

“There are just a lot of kids out there – in my opinion – who aren’t ready yet”. “Too many easy scores, too many dumb mistakes. Not a good game”. Their scoring average of 16.2 points per game isn’t much better, ranking 124th out of 127 teams.

UConn quarterback Bryan Shirreffs threw for 256 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score to lead the Huskies to a 40-13 victory over UCF Saturday at Bright House Networks Stadium. UConn is 2-3 on the season.

Holman finished 27-of-50 for 255 yards, with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Nick Patti with 1:38 remaining.

Redshirt junior Hayden Jones caught a kickoff return, stepped out of the end zone and then kneeled the ball in that same end zone for an errant safety to put UConn ahead 9-3.

“I don’t know how many balls he (Holman) had dropped on him, but at least five or six were big potential plays”, O’Leary said. “He would have a really nice day otherwise”.

So, when UConn actually did decide to take the trophy to the game, Central Florida wasn’t having it. The Knights” mascot, Knightro, held up a sign in the middle of the game, showing meme taken from the 2004 movie “Mean Girls, ‘ mocking UConn’s feeble attempts to make the game a rivalry.
