McCarthy announces bid to become House speaker

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) signaled Tuesday that he will do his best to get major lingering pieces of legislation passed before he departs next month, leaving the next House leader with a clean slate. “I asked for their input, and I got a little – few pieces of advice, but I would hope to make an announcement in the next day or two about that”, he said.

“I believe in fighting, but I believe in winning”, McCarthy told CBS’ “This Morning”, explaining why, although he opposes federal funding for Planned Parenthood, he doesn’t want to shut the government down over the issue. Among issues still to be settled: a transportation bill, tax breaks and whether to raise the government’s debt limit.

Boehner announced his resignation on Friday under pressure from conservatives.

“I would be hopeful that any nominee put on the House floor would already have that 218 vote support in the conference”, Meadows said on Monday.

Boehner announced he’ll resign from speaker as of October. 30, citing turmoil in the caucus in the House. Ted Cruz, a “jackass”.

“What have they accomplished?” he said. “And let’s most importantly listen to the American people”.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy says he’s different than John Boehner: His skin tone doesn’t have quite the same hue.

He made his candidacy official Monday in a letter to fellow lawmakers. “There’s no chance of that happening”, McCain told MSNBC. Republican leaders want to fund the government through December 11, and use the time until then to work out a broader deal on the budget for the next fiscal year. “In short, I am guided by something Ronald Reagan once said: ‘The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things”. “Government shutdowns never work”.

Beyond that, he praised Boehner, and used language similar to the outgoing speaker’s in saying his first job would be helping people. But that task will be left to the next House speaker, his aides said. His approach to conflict within the conference, he says, is “malice toward none”, quoting from Lincoln’s Second Inaugural address.

Fiorina suggested that McConnell’s leadership, too, has been unsatisfactory.

House Republicans are expected to meet this week behind closed doors to talk about their future, but leadership elections are not likely until next week at the earliest.

But former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush called Boehner “a great public servant”. “I think it would revert back to a power-based system”.
