Local Muslim Leader Says Campaign’s Focus on Niqab is “Unfortunate”
The court argued that Ishaq should have the right to vote in the October 19 election.

Zunera Ishaq’s lawyer Lorne Waldman says the 29-year-old was granted citizenship today in a private ceremony in Mississauga, west of Toronto.
The social-democratic N.D.P. seemed potent early on, but the polls right now predict a confrontation between the Conservative incumbent, Stephen Harper-a charmless but effective politician-and the Liberal’s Justin Trudeau, the son of the one former Prime Minister who remains famous even in America.
The Federal Court of Canada found the ban unlawful in February.
It ought to be obvious, but if the furor over the niqab could be entirely explained by concern for women, then the response would never be to humiliate and hurt them.
“The processing of privately sponsored refugees continued throughout this period”, said Chris Day, a spokesman for Immigration Minister Chris Alexander. Revelations that Mr Harper’s government intervened to slow down the asylum review process – to ensure Canadian national security, his supporters claim – will undoubtedly be used as a political cudgel by his opponents.
Tremonti asked Ishaq how she is being treated in public.
She added she fears the tactic may be working. Each woman that wears a niqab has a deep personal relationship with the garment; it represents integral aspects of their identity.
“We invite you to participate in this legal and peaceful movement”, the group says in French in its description. We’re helping more Canadians become homeowners by providing new support to buy and invest in their homes. Only four reported spouses had encouraged them to wear it; none described being “forced” to wear the garment, and none was opposed to removing it for identification. Canada’s Charter of Rights And Freedoms would seem empty if Muslim women do not have as much right to wear the regalia of their religion as Orthodox Jewish and Catholic women and men have to wear theirs. “It’s fine to talk, but action is needed to show the absurdity of the thing”, she wrote. “So, it is very important for me that I am covering my face when I am taking the oath for the citizenship of Canada”, Ishaq told the CBC this week.
According to a police spokesperson, the hate crimes co-ordinator will be involved in the investigation. In the past week, a pregnant woman wearing a headscarf in Montreal was knocked down by two teenagers.
She acknowledges there is a difference of opinion among Muslim scholars about wearing the niqab and its religious significance.

Coming after weeks of bruising, divisive debate on Muslim face coverings at citizenship ceremonies, which in turn followed an emotionally charged allegation that a drowned Syrian toddler’s refugee family had aspired to come to Canada but was rebuffed, the latest flare-up sends the campaign teams into the crucial Thanksgiving holiday weekend in fighting form. “Hey Harper, do I matter now?” It has defunded women’s programs, refused to call an inquiry into murdered and missing Indigenous women, and will not fund global health organizations if they provide abortions. But local Tory candidates including Vancouver South MP Wai Young and Richmond Centre MP Alice Wong praised Harper as the “clear choice” in the 2015 federal election who can protect Canada’s “fragile conomy” in a “dangerous and uncertain world”.
