North Texas fires coach McCarney after loss

Just hours after UNT football lost to Portland State 66-7, the school announced they have fired head football coach Dan McCarney.

What made the loss extra bitter is that UNT paid Portland State $425,000 to come to Denton for UNT’s homecoming game. North Texas (0-5) hit bottom on Saturday at home against Portland State. His best season came in 2013 when his team went 9-4 and won the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

North Texas is a bad team, one of the worst in the FBS.

He was not originally scheduled to speak after the game, but called back reporters to share his feelings after Villarreal announced he had decided to make a change. “We are coming in ready to get better, learn from our mistakes and take this thing where we want to go”. McCarney was in the middle of this fifth season at North Texas, where he was 22-32 overall.

Athletic director Rick Villareal said the program wasn’t going in the right direction and that it was time to make a change.
