The Indian off-spinner suffered the injury while trying to stop an AB de Villiers’ shot during the 32nd over of the match.

Offspinner R Ashwin has picked up a a side strain during the first ODI against South Africa in Kanpur. However, the Indian cricket board did not mention how long Ashwin will be out of action.

The 29-year-old managed to come back onto the field after six overs, but his second spell lasted all but one over.

Ashwin’s availability in the remainder of the series will be subject to medical assessment. Harbhajan will join the team before the second match of the series in Indore. If Ashwin fails to recover in time and misses few matches, then it’s going to be a big blow for Team India, as he has been the most consistent bowler of late.

Harbhajan Singh was a regular in the Indian team across all the formats before he was dropped in 2011. Harbhajan, 35, has claimed 263 wickets in 232 one-day internationals.
