Hillary Clinton opposes trade deal she promoted as secretary of state

“As someone who voted against the North American Free Trade Agreement, the Central American Free Trade Agreement and Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China and who has helped lead the effort against the Trans-Pacific Partnership, I am glad that Secretary Clinton has now come on board”, Sanders said in a statement. It should deepened economic ties between the member countries by cutting down tariffs, and established labor and environmental standards to protect multinational corporations’ intellectual property.

In opposing the TPP, Clinton is now siding with her rival Bernie Sanders, a progressive who has shown surprising strength in Democratic primary polls, and against a putative foe, Joe Biden. “I don’t believe it’s going to meet the high bar I have set”, she declared. If its details prove to be as advertised, people are likely to conclude that the benefits of the deal outweigh its risks. Glass Steagall was repealed by her husband Bill Clinton during his Presidency.

Clinton said she was “worried” that the trade accord lacked protections against nations that manipulate their currency rates and provisions dealing with market exclusivity for pharmaceutical drug companies.

While others are expressing negative reactions, President Obama has reacted in a positive way.

One good aspect of the fast track legislation passed earlier this year is that it gives Congress 90 days to review the agreement.

“We also discussed the Trans-Pacific Partnership and we shared perspectives on Japan’s possible participation, because we think this holds out great economic opportunities to all participating nations”.

Later, in a statement, she added, “I appreciate the hard work that President Obama and his team put into this process and recognise the strides they made”.

Even though Biden hasn’t entered the race, speculation about the vice president’s potential candidacy has shifted into high gear in recent weeks. Among Democrats, all three leading presidential candidates are now against TPP.

“Unfortunately, the Bush administration and Republicans in Congress largely ignored calls for reform”, Clinton writes.

Then she stepped from the White House and into 2016 presidential politics and struck a more reserved and slightly skeptical tone, withholding a clear opinion on the deal.

Well, the negotiations recently came to a close, and Clinton promptly announced that she opposes the deal.

October 8 U.S. Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton on Thursday introduced a plan to curb what she called Wall Street abuses, including a “risk fee” on the largest financial institutions and breaking up banks considered “too big to fail”. Clinton has already been pulled in the same direction – coming out against both the Cadillac tax on high-cost health plans (a cause dear to USA unions) and the Keystone pipeline (a touchstone for many in the green wing of her party).

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton raised eyebrows pretty much across the board on Wednesday.

Clinton’s new stances are not minor disagreements over obscure policies, but diametrically opposed to significant parts of Obama’s legacy.

“I think Hillary Clinton would be the first to say that when you’re sitting in the seat that I’m sitting in the situation room, things look a little bit different, because she’s been right there next to me”.
