The German is contracted until 2018 with Mainz 05, but Villa aren’t letting that put them off as they look set to make a bid when the transfer window reopens in January.

And Sherwood has been given two games to save his job against Chelsea and Swansea.
Owner Randy Lerner is reportedly growing increasingly concerned at the prospect of missing out on the cash windfall from the Premier League’s new TV rights deal and, according to the Mirror’s report, the ex-Spurs coach is now facing the chop if his side fail to earn a win at either Chelsea next weekend or when Swansea visit Villa Park the following match.
Sherwood is understood to have had a meeting with chief executive Tom Fox about the run which has left the claret and blues four points adrift of Albion and mired in the relegation zone.
He even had the chance to write himself into club folklore with an appearance in the FA Cup final against Arsenal.
After losing Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph, though, Sherwood had to do a lot of building work to his first-team and made plenty of new signings.
Sherwood was keen to recruit proven Premier League players, including Esteban Cambiasso and Aaron Lennon, yet the club went for youngsters from overseas with sell-on potential in a strategy spearheaded by head of recruitment Paddy Reilly and newly appointed sporting director Hendrik Almstadt.
Villa have spent £54.5m during the close season importing fresh talent – mainly from France – but this has so far failed to pay off.
He said: “I like to try to win enough games rather than going out there not to be beaten”.
As an Aston Villa (and Sherwood) fan, I do feel as this really unfair on Sherwood who has only been in the managerial spotlight for a short while and hasn’t had the time to get to grips with Aston Villa.
