Strachan coy over future after Scots’ Euro flop

“He’s been huge for me at club level and huge for me at worldwide level as well”.

“I actually feel a bit sorry for them, to put that much work into it, to score two wonderful goals”. In a football sense, we could have done a few things better at Poland’s second goal.

“Sometimes there’s not a lot you can do about that”. “It takes a horrendous deflection, hits the post and comes back the way”.

But no sooner had Scotland gone ahead than news came through from Dublin that Shane Long had given the Republic of Ireland the lead against Germany.

“Tomorrow is a very important game for us and we have to have full concentration”.

“We are getting closer but we need to try to get over the line and it’s going to be hard in the upcoming World Cup campaign as well – but we are looking forward to it”.

“All I know is that over the tournament they have had about 30 per cent more fouls (given) against them than we have and more yellow cards than we have, so that is the reality”.

Gordon Strachan is set to come out of contract but the Scotland manager is yet to make a decision on his future.

“And for me to talk about myself is wrong. They, along with my coaching staff, are the priority”.

“I’m sure I’m echoing the sentiments of all the lads when I say we want him to stay”. I will leave that to other people.

“I have people in this building hurting and I need to look after them”.

Strachan stressed that teamwork is key to dampen the threat of Lewandowski and his team-mates.

When those statistics were subsequently put to Nawalka at Poland’s pre-match press conference, he smiled before saying: “We are anticipating a very hard game”.

Strachan added: “Each of the strikers have different assets and plusses but we don’t have an all-round guy who has every one of these and then you have to think what type of game should it be, and pick the players that would suit that game”.

“There were chances we should have taken, however we have to focus on what has happened”, Nawalka said.

Poland now face a shoot-out in Warsaw against the Republic with the pair locked on 18 points. Ireland picked up four points off Germany and we lost to Georgia. Right at the end of a first half Scotland’s wingers James Forrest and Ritchie combined to sink an equaliser worthy of gracing any global. We’ll go back and everyone needs to calm down after the game and we’ll speak about it before Gibraltar.
