Existing members get a slight reprieve, and will keep their current price for a year, the company said. The other monthly plans, a $11.99 four-screen HD video plan and a $7.99 one-screen standard definition plan, remain the same.

Netflix last raised the price for its standard service in May 2014, when it asked for $1 more while also launching the basic tier.

The $9 per month plan that lets you stream on up to 2 devices simultaneously is now $10 for new members.

The experience taught Netflix to reward its existing subscribers as higher prices are phased in on new customers.

Current subscribers will enjoy a year-long grace period before their subscription costs go up. The price hike will apply to those in the US, Canada, and Latin America, it said.

Those who are already signed up and paying $7.99 per month will continue to pay that price for a limited time.

Although the company stopped breaking down Canadian subscription numbers several quarters ago, Netflix now has more than 65 million customers worldwide. On Netflix’s United Kingdom website, pricing is listed as $9.99 Dollars for the standard plan.

The plan that’s affected allows for two simultaneous streams for each customer and includes HD.

Sorry, consumers – but a price hike is something that Wall Street has wanted for a while at Netflix.

The streaming video operator has increasingly been developing its own in-home programs in the hopes of keeping programming costs lower.
