Body of 1 missing boater recovered from Lake of the Woods

Joining the Sheriff’s Office in the search effort were the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Border Patrol and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

A foot search was done on several shallow water areas near the shore line on Flag Island.

Haugtvedt, and two other men-Keith Ayers, and Cody Ostendorf-disappeared after going fishing Saturday, October 3.

The trio left Sunset Resort on Oak Island around 11:30 p.m. last Friday, October 2, and were reported missing on Saturday.

Meanwhile a lantern/candle light vigil is planned at 7 p.m.at the Zippel Bay State Park swimming beach, located on southern shores of Lake of the Woods.

“We’re still waiting on finding something out about the boys”, LaValla said in a telephone interview before news of a body being recovered. “It was very quiet”.

“I encouraged everybody to put their arm around someone because there are a tremendous amount of hurting people”, Lapos said.

“These are our friends and our family”, she wrote on the website. “May you find comfort in your time of need”.

A GoFundMe page launched three days ago has raised more than $21,000.

An air, ground and water search is continuing Friday.

The Forum also reports that Haugtvedt is originally from Warren, Minnesota, Ostendorf grew up in the Twin Cities, and that Ayers hails from Pennsylvania.

OAK ISLAND, Minn. – One of the three boaters missing on the Lake of the Woods has been found.
