During a funeral ceremony held Friday for the victims of the shooting, Obama said Americans have for too always been “blind” to the “unique mayhem” caused by gun violence in the USA. Instead, he touted his record on guns as a way to balance public safety and Second Amendment rights.

Bush has received strong support from the National Rifle Association, and as Florida governor he signed the “stand your ground” law that received attention after the Trayvon Martin shooting.

Bush said at the event that he believes voters in swing, or so-called “purple states”, will be the ones who determine which president succeeds Obama in 2017.

According to a 2013 report by the nonpartisan research arm of the Connecticut General Assembly, which looked into the law using FBI crime reporting statistics, gun violence in Florida indeed went down in the years after the law was enacted in 1999 – but it also went down across the entire country.

As reported earlier by OneNewsNow, since officially announcing his candidacy ex- Florida Governor Jeb Bush has been trying to convince conservatives in the Republican Party that he’s not his father or his brother as he seeks the GOP presidential nomination in 2016.

His comments just before his visit to Charleston scheduled for Monday where Bush intends to meet with black ministers in a community devastated by the shooting.

Bush also told reporters he was disappointed in both supreme court rulings from the last week that upheld Obama’s health care overhaul and legalized gay marriage nationwide.
