Speaking about his performances last week, he said: “I played better as the week went on and hopefully I can continue that into Wimbledon“.

However, at Wimbledon there are just two cases of unseeded singles winners, both men.

It took Murray another 18 months to reach a second Slam final, and again it was Federer across the other side of the net.

But McEnroe reckons the era of Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Murray and Djokovic is drawing to a close. Tennis stars Virginia Wade, Gigi Fernandez and Pam Shriver and Martina Navratilova were among his backing singers as he performed hits like Congratulations. The issue became such a talking point that, after their recent French Open semi-final, Murray refused even to discuss Djokovic’s seven-minute medical time-out at a critical stage of that match.

Despite the weight of numbers suggesting that his best years are behind him, Federer fervently believes that another Wimbledon is not beyond him and he was buoyed by his eighth Halle title at the weekend. It marked his first grass-court title since he triumphed at Wimbledon in 2011 and it proved he is still a threat on grass despite an up-and-down season.

. Four weeks later, he thrashed Federer to win Olympic gold on Centre Court.

Such Paris disappointments have previously worked in his favour. “He has a big chance to go through and, of course, Roger is a champion there”.

Because of that 1-2 seeding, Williams and Kvitova won’t meet until the final.

Having escaped his unprecedented problems on clay-which saw the nine-time French Open victor eliminated from Roland Garros at the quarter-final stage by Djokovic-it seemed Nadal’s victory in Germany would allow him to gather momentum.

Mauresmo, a former Wimbledon women’s champion, replaced his previous trainer Ivan Lendl in March previous year, making Murray the highest profile man in the sport to appoint a female coach. Coach Boris Becker insists Novak Djokovic will be starting from square one at Wimbledon, despite his past success there. Murray appeared unconvinced by his opponent’s ailments and levelled the match in another tie-break.
