Tamal and Ian, though having lost the competition, have done exceptionally well, too! Her final piece, a tiered lemon drizzle cake decorated with a sari decked in the colors of the Union Jack, impressed judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, with the hard-to-please Berry saying it was “perfect”.
Three finalists were asked to make iced buns for the signature bake and raspberry millefeuille for the technical challenge. There’s been staring at ovens, tears and for the first time, a few genius facial expressions (thanks Nadiya!).
And last night, after a tense hour on screen and on social media, she baked her way into the nation’s hearts in the Great British Bake Off. It’s all a bit of fun and not to be taken seriously. “I might need therapy to fix myself now because it has been months of just lying and training my poker face and making sure I don’t give it away because it’s such a big secret to keep”.
Jayne Wilkinson, a receptionist at the Savoy hotel, was hoping to surprise her mother with a signed copy of the book.
“But actually, in the end, she couldn’t enjoy it because I was in there baking and she had no idea what was going on”.
“I don’t even drink and I feel trollied” the full-time mum from Leeds told Chris Evans on his BBC2 Breakfast Show this morning, “I’m exhausted”.
And sure enough, the amateur baker set aside her nerves to nail the final, producing a showstopper so worthy of its name it was described as “sheer perfection” by the judges.
‘It was only when I went to school that it dawned on me that something was not right.
“My worst moment in the tent was the biscuit box”, he admitted.
Nadiya, 30, chose to bake a wedding cake as her finale as she and husband Abdal, 34, never had on on their big day as it is not part of a traditional Bangladeshi wedding ceremony. She said that in previous series she had an inkling but that it could be anyone’s to win this year.
‘When I got to the final I thought I’d already won.
User Eirian Williams said: “Crying at the final”.
Holding her trophy, she vowed never to doubt herself again.
