David Sweat was wounded and taken into custody by law enforcement officers near the Canadian border, several TV networks reported.

He was spotted by Sgt.

“At approximately 3:20 p.m. on June 28, Sergeant Jay Cook of the New York State Police spotted a suspicious man walking down a roadway”, state police said in a statement.

Friday evening, there was an active gun battle in the woods where they believed Sweat was cornered, but Cuomo later said authorities were not sure where Sweat was.

She learned that the authorities had cornered Sweat on her neighbor’s property.

Governor Andrew Cuomo told NY1 News on Monday Sweat was in shock.

He told investigators he did favors for the prisoners – including giving them pliers and a screwdriver and allowing them into the rear catwalk – in exchange for paintings by Matt and information on illegal activity by other inmates. “Anyone who we find who was culpable and guilty of cooperating in this escape will be fully prosecuted”.

In the end, the escapees claimed no new victims.

During the search, police pursued more than 2,000 tips regarding Matt and Sweat. “These were killers…. We couldn’t tolerate them being on the loose”.

After Sweat was shot, he was arrested, stabilized at a nearby hospital in Malone and then airlifted to the trauma center at Albany Medical Center.

The other escaped murderer, Richard Matt, was shot three times in the head and killed Friday afternoon in Malone, about 30 miles from the maximum-security state prison the two men broke out of on June 6.

Cuomo says the trooper opened fire after Sweat fled from him.

Cook was praised by Governor Cuomo and the State Police Superintendent for courageous policing. “He wasn’t sleeping in any cave or anything like that for three weeks, that’s for sure”.

“He did an excellent job”, D’Amico said.

D’Amico said that Cook was alone on a routine patrol and not acting on a tip.

Sweat, 35, and Matt, 49, had escaped in audacious fashion – they used power tools to cut through cell walls, then crawled through pipes to emerge from a manhole in the village of Dannemora, home to the sprawling prison.

The second of two escaped USA prisoners, David Sweat has been shot and captured by police.

Mitchell, 51, of Dickinson Center, New York, faces felony charges of aiding escape, promoting prison contraband and providing material assistance.

She was planning to be a getaway driver for the inmates after the early-morning breakout but got cold feet, officials have said.

A second prison worker, 53-year-old Gene Palmer, is also facing charges. Mr. Sweat killed a sheriff’s deputy in Broome County in a savage, savage way. Tarsia on July 4, 2002.

Saturday night brought foul weather to the area and officials had grown increasingly confident that Sweat was ill-equipped to cope with the heavy downpours and would soon be captured. Matt was serving 25 years to life for killing and dismembering his ex- boss. They were added to the US Marshals Service’s 15 Most Wanted fugitives list two weeks after getting away.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he spoke to Sgt. Whatever the cost, Cuomo said, there was “no doubt, in my opinion, that it’s worth it”.

Sweat was rushed to hospital where his condition is unknown.

Sweat’s capture comes two days after Matt – the other escapee – was shot dead by a border patrol agent in a wooded area almost 48 km from the prison.
