Giggs: Depay Will Bring Back The Ronaldo Factor

“If there are players available who are winners, who are proven, then yeah, let’s go and get them”, he told The Sunday Times.

United kick off their 2015/16 League season against London outfit Tottenham Hotspur.

Welshman Giggs, assistant to Louis van Gaal, agrees with the manager’s assertion that United are close to competing for the top honours again after two lean campaigns following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

“Cardiff have always been the first result I look for after United, the one that mattered, it’s always been that way”, said Giggs. And the teams above us will strengthen, too. Tottenham Hotspur’s Hugo Lloris is the favourite to come in and has made no secret of his desire to play Champions League football again.

Born in the Welsh capital, Giggs ended up as a youngster in Manchester United’s prestigious academy and went on to enjoy at Old Trafford the greatest Premier League career of any player. We dropped points we shouldn’t have and got off to a bad start.

“But we’re not too far away”, her continued.

Depay finished the season as the top scorer in Holland with 22 goals in just 30 apperances and also registered five assists to help PSV clinch their first league title in seven years.

“One thing we probably have lacked since Cristiano [Ronaldo] – and Becks [David Beckham] before him – is free kicks”, the United assistant manager said.

Giggs is delighted with Depay’s record of goals scored from free kicks. Over a season if you can score from free-kicks and corners it adds up and makes a real difference in winning games.

Real Madrid are desperate to bring the PFA Player of the Year runner-up back to Spain, but United are hopeful that they can persuade him to sign an extension to a contract which expires in 2016.

But, in a classic case of being careful what you wish for, Giggs discovered things didn’t quite work out that day as he might have wished. You’re at a club where the fans want you to do things off the cuff, to entertain them.
