FSC backs Trans-Pacific Partnership deal

None of the many promises made during this long election campaign will matter to the Canadian economy a fraction as much as the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

Under the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement signed in June, tariffs on more than 85 percent of goods traded between the two countries will be cut to zero immediately.

“It is a major outcome not just for Japan, but also for the future of the Asia-Pacific”, Abe told reporters shortly after the deal was clinched.

President Barack Obama said Tuesday he personally worked the phones to build support in the closing negotiations of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal. “Supply management should have been kept right out of TPP negotiations”.

On Monday, 12 Pacific Rim countries, with the United States and Japan being the biggest economies among them, reached a consensus on the wording and subject matter of the TPP free trade agreement.

The net impact on global activity may be small as increased trade within the TPP is offset by trade diverted from countries outside the bloc, Fitch Ratings said.

However, the statement said that China was open to any mechanism that followed rules of the World Trade Organisation and could boost the economic integration of the region. Trade with these countries accounted for 42 percent of US agricultural exports in 2014, contributing $63 billion to the USA economy. Aimed at bolstering U.S. economic dominance in the face of China’s spectacular growth, the TPP faced huge opposition from progressive groups who have cast the deal as “NAFTA on steroids”.

Passage though of the TPP agreement by member-state legislatures, including the US Congress, is not guaranteed.

“The Riverina is a vast agricultural region and there are a number of new opportunities for local farmers to increase their production and exports to new markets”. Today, all supply managed farmers earn their livelihood from the marketplace, but the TPP will deny them the ability to fully serve Canadian consumers.

“I congratulate the TPP countries, their ministers and their teams of negotiators”, said Roberto Azevêdo, the director-general of the World Trade Organization.

While not having seen the detail of the agreement, Mr Gregan understood it would provide improved access into key TPP markets and a secure rules-based system to help improve market access.
