It detailed the chain of events that led to the arrest of Benjamin Knox, 21, an offensive lineman on the university’s football team.
A USF football player is facing gun charges. USF athletics officials say Knox has been suspended from all team activities.
Cops found Knox in his dorm, along with the handgun they believe was used for the random spray of bullets along a residence hall’s exterior. No one was injured.
When officers arrived to the scene, Daniel said they found no individuals, but spotted a parked vehicle, after checking the garage floor by floor, which contained an open gun case and a box of ammunition visible on the seat.
It was not immediately clear whether Knox has an attorney.
Hillsborough County jail records state that Knox was charged with discharging a firearm on school property and shooting at or into an occupied building. They also found a number of spent shell casings near the vehicle, according to the police statement.
According towards the University of South Florida Police Department, cops collected a voice call about footages dismissed around 7 a.m. Sunday.
“Any time you hear of a person with a gun on campus or a few type of discharge of a weapon, you automatically go to the worst and hope for the best”, said USF police Assistant Chief Chris Daniel, per McNeill.
“There is a fine line as to how we have to put this information out”, Daniel said.
“[The shots] seemed ill-placed or random”, Daniel told Orlando Sentinel.
